I have a crackling sound in my ear?

My ear has been "crackling" for about a week and it is driving me nuts. Went to the doc and he said I have fluid behind my eardrum and to take a decongestant. I am doing this, but so far nothing has helped...any suggestions to speed this up? the noise is so irritating!!!!
