Is it better to live in Montpelier or Burlington, VT?

I'd like to live in small-to-medium-sized city in Vermont that has easy access to rafting, skiing, camping and hiking. I'd also like to live in a city with reasonable employment prospects -- I (nearly) have a BA in English and my professional background is in technical writing and proofreading/copyrighting. I'm also a Starbucks-certified barista, so I can work that angle too. Which city should I choose?
